5. Join a supportive network.

Some good online sites are Motown Girl, Nappturality, Long Hair Care Forum, etc. But don't just stop there. You need a supportive network for your life in general. Hair is only a small part of it. If your spirit is content then your hair will be beautiful.

6. Remember it's your hair!

If you are committed to a healthy you and healthy hair then the occasional pressing, flat-ironing, etc. should be fine. It's your hair! Don't become re-imprisoned by other peoples ideas about what you should do to your hair.

7. Just do it! It'll grow back.

London ~ Day 4 & Eye Opening Paris

Spent my final day in London. Had a great time riding the boat on the River Thames. Took in the last of my sites, including the London Bridge and Harrod's. Went out for a really late Italian Dinner and got ready to leave for Paris the next morning.

Paris~

Got up at 5 am to make a 6:45 am Eurostar train to Paris. The Eurostar is a great way to travel between London and many of other European cities because it's fast, quiet, and comfortable. It takes you right under the English Channel, which at its widest point is 350 miles, and in to Paris in less than 2 1/2 hours. Through the train windows, I got to see the English and Parisian country sides.

After my train ride I got in the Taxi que and was whisked off to my hotel. Yes, whisked! The cab driver drove so fast through all the tight little streets I had to hold on to my wig! LOL

He dropped me at a small hotel on the Rue de Gros Caillou called Hotel Eiffel Rive Gauche. I had gotten a good deal with my train ride so I took it. It's a 2 star hotel that is clean, well situated, and extremely french. It bordered on bordello, but since I was only staying for one night and because it was clean, I didn't care much. I immediately dropped my luggage and went to see the sites.

London and Paris are day and night. Both are large cosmopolitan cities but, in my opinion, lie at separate ends of the spectrum. At first glance its easy to see how the US and the UK are related. London has a very bustling population like New York. I would even say a larger population than New York. On the streets you see every shade of human being imaginable. It seemed as if just about every person I met in London was mixed. Londons not afraid to broadcast it either.

On more commercials than I could count there were mixed couples. Black and white being the most prominent. For the first time I saw something I had always wondered about when watching American TV. Where are the mixed couples that show Black Women coupled up with White Men? London showed them both. It was refreshing but strange at the same time as I started to wonder where the same race couples were?

The people in London were generally nice and helpful. Maybe slightly apprehensive because I embodied a little more sun in my skin than they are used to in their overcast land that promotes perpetual paleness (especially in the minorities) - but still pleasant.

Paris on the other hand... Paris is a beautiful city. It has lots of tree-lined streets and beautiful monuments wherever you look. The architecture is breathtaking. The food is phenomenal and the fashion. True, the fashion is enviable but the people are beyond smug. Unbeknownst to me before my trip is the subversive racism of the French. People and the media tend to romanticize Paris in such a way that you think that Paris is very open and egalitarian. You think because Josephine Baker was able to escape there to shake her tatas and swing bananas or because Langston Hughes found his thrill in de Maupassant that Paris is a black person's paradise. WRONG!

Paris is a segregated society that still openly criticizes its minorities (check the links below) while denying that it has a race problem. Quite honestly as a person of color, if you are not rich or a well known celebrity the French would rather you not visit. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't overt but I did get the since that if I had been 2-3 shades darker and a little less stylish, I would have been openly ignored. While walking through the Jardin des Tuileries I stopped at a concession stand to get a waffle. Prior to my approach all I heard were sharp Mercis and Bonjours. When I got to the counter the two women just looked at me as if to say, "Why are you here? You must know what you want if you are bold enough to approach the counter without bowing your eyes." I just held her gaze and said, "HELLO." They both stepped back away from the counter, the one who was serving me bowed her head and took my order. It was obvious then that I wasn't a french black and that their attempts at intimidation were not going to work. I watched her like a hawk to make sure she made my food right and then went on my way through the garden.

I swear to you that I was probably the only black person in the gardens.

The Louvre Museum sits at the end of the Tuileries. This museum is massive and cannot be seen in its entirety in under 4 days. I just wanted a taste of it. At the ticket counter, the attendant was sweet and helpful. It wasn't until I had left her to go to the first exhibit, Les Portes Du Ciel, that I realized I needed another ticket to get in. I went to the first ticket counter closest to the exhibit, thinking that I could just pay the extra 5 euros and get my ticket exchanged. The attendant scolded me as if I should have known better and then told me to go back to the other ticket counter to have it fixed. It's bad enough that because I don't speak the language (although I can read it well enough) I'm at a disadvantage and rely heavily on smiling to get my message across, to have to be overly nice to mean people so that you don't appear threatening is even worse. When she told me to go back to the other ticket counter, she realized she didn't really know what I needed and asked me again. Then when she got it (a simple void of my ticket and reprint of a new one) she had to call her supervisor to override her system and issue me the ticket. Her supervisor was very sweet and helpful. Uggh!

Don't get me wrong. Everyone is Paris is not bad. I would even venture to say that most in Paris are not bad. Those that were helpful, truly were just that and those that weren't I cut short and went on my way. I've learned very quickly in my life how not to fight pride with pride.

With that said (and because this is getting long), I would definitely go back to Paris. The shopping is amazing and the scenery is beautiful. Parisian women know how to keep their fashion simple, which makes them look so elegant. Paris in the spring is truly wonderful. Yes, I would go back but I think I would prefer to go with a few people I enjoy being around and after I read the Wretched of the Earth.

London ~ Days 2 & 3

Day 2

Time to go see the sites London is famous for. Woke up at around 11am, got dressed and left shortly after. Stopped a Pret a Manger, to get a brown bag lunch, and then jumped on the Tube and went to Trafalgar Square. Check out Nelson's Column and the Stone Lions.

I had every intention of going into the National Portrait Gallery but forgot.

Jumped on the bus and got off at Parliament Square where there was a rally going on for the Tamil Tigers. If you haven't heard about the recent hunger strike of one of their members, Parameswaram Subramaniam, check the link. He was in the midst of the rally at Parliament square.

From this vantage point you can easily see the famed Big Ben Clock which is attached to the Parliament building, the Thames river, and Westminster Abbey. *Tidbit* The clock is actually called The Great Clock and St. Stephens Tower. Big Ben is only the non-official name of the bell within the clock.

After visiting Big Ben, I went over to Westminster Abbey and then walked about 1/4 mile down Birdcage Road to St. James Park and looked at the tulips. London is very rainy and so it has great gardens and lots of greenery.

From there I walked past the Guards Museum, Number 10 Downing Street, and straight to Buckingham Palace which is the official state home of the royal family. Unfortunately due to the rain, there would be no changing of the guard nor was the Queen's gallery open.

Afterwards, I walked straight up The Mall, around a few corners where I picked up a gift for a coworker and straight on to Piccadilly Circus. Didn't take any pictures of the actual Circus but it's reminiscent of New York's Time Square, just a more compacted version.

Stopped into a patisserie and coffee shop and got some White Chocolate Truffle Cake and Hot Chocolate with Chantilly Cream.

Then went shopping on Regent and Oxford Streets. These streets are full of retail stores, mostly chain, but mostly high-end. I had to wade through a sea of people just to make it into the entrance of TopShop. Got some earrings. Loved the shoes, but I had to save some money for Paris.

Jumped on the Tube at Westminster and made it back to Camden. Stopped and got myself a waffle from a street vendor. Excellent! Had it covered in strawberries, chocolate, and cream. Went back to the hotel and fell out.

Day 3

I was so tired I just stayed in for most of the day and ordered room service. Later that night at around 9:00 pm, I got dressed and ran out for dinner. Ate at a restaurant called Zensai, where I had fried noodles and got my first taste of Avocado Ice Cream while listening to two friends try to mend their relationship.

London ~ Day 1

Cheerio! I'm back and somewhat rested. Had a great time on vacation. Saw some great sites and met some really nice people. Also, got an eye opener towards the end of my trip.

This past week was spent in Europe, mainly London and Paris. I had decided that I needed to go on vacation, and what better a time to take my first true international trip (a cruise to Mexico really doesn't count) than now. I forced myself to get my passport and after that there was no stopping me.

Day 1

9:35 a.m. - Landed at Heathrow International after a long 9 hour flight from Houston (had a prior 3 hour connecting flight from L.A. to Houston).

Sitting in the middle seat during the international portion was hard. The flight was packed so I had no other option. For some reason Continental didn't let me pick my seat at the point my reservation was made. I had to wait a week before I could do so. Other than that the flight was pretty cool. I sat next to a lovely Indian woman who works for Rolls Royce and was able to give me some tips on the best sites to see in both cities. She and I also mused over various Bollywood films and songs we both liked. If you like Bollywood then you have to check out the movie Fashion with Priyanka Chopra. If not, then just check it out for the great fashions and beautiful makeup.

British Customs was quick but very probing. I felt like I was on trial. Normal I guess for a first-timer. After customs I made a quick exchange of some US dollars $ for British Pounds £ (a racket) and went directly to the train terminal located in the airport. If you ever want to get around London quickly, cheaply but effectively then you have to get an Oyster Card and travel the "Tube."

London's network of underground trains "Tubes" are so vast you can get from the airport to the city centre, out to Stonehenge, to the palace, and back again in no time at all and all for under $6 per day. I bought a week's pass on my Oyster card and it cost me £25.90 ($38.90) and I still have money left on it even though I was constantly on the go. The card allowed me to get on practically any London bus, train, or ferry boat I needed to. I wish L.A. had a system like this. I probably wouldn't have a car!

11:30 am - Jumped off the Tube at the Camden Station and just knew I had stepped into the

middle of a carnival. The streets were packed with people. I wondered if I had gotten off at the wrong location, so I stepped into a pub to ask for directions. My hotel was right behind me, but with all the people I couldn't see a thing.

Checked in at the Hotel, The Holiday Inn at Camden, in Camden Town. Dropped my stuff and went out for a bite to eat. Ended up first going over a foot bridge into the Camden Street Markets where I went shopping! Located under the Locks the markets part historical artifacts, part swap meet, part mall, part ancient food market. I got myself a quick profiterole and started buying gifts for the family.

Later that day I walked the high street and stopped at a restaurant called the Camden Bar & Restaurant where I had breakfast (brewed tea with lemon, fried eggs and veggie sausage). It left a lot to be desired so I immediately went grocery shopping at the local Whole Foods. The rest of the day I spent walking around my neighborhood getting familiar. I went back to the hotel at around 8pm and slept for the rest of the day.

Opinions are sometimes like virginity. It's good to hold on to them a little longer and share them with that special person. Otherwise all that mental mind hoeing can't be good.

Why dude at Sephora today get mad at me when he realized I was only exchanging a product and not buying anything new? I could have sworn someone lied to me and told me that didn't work on commission. It was like he went from being all lights, camera, action to brownout mode.

Don't repeat what I say and act like you're telling me something new. I was there for the original conversation. I know who told you the whoopty whoop.

I don't like men to be giggly. It's fine after he's gotten to know me but don't be giggly before. If he's giggling it means I'm bored.

Joan on Girlfriends was dating a guy with wide hips. I still get shocked everytime I see it in person.

I loves me some Fritters from Jim Dandy's in the South Central.

You Know What Irks Me?: The Reverse Race Sympathy Card

I was all set to post about the "Anti-Role Model" but while watching one of my favorite shows, The Amazing Race, I saw this mess that made me mad. What mess, pray tell? The REVERSE RACE SYMPATHY CARD.

You may be asking yourself, "now what is the Reverse Race Sympathy Card?" The Reverse Race Sympathy Card, not to be confused with Reverse Racism, is when someone of another race or someone at a momentary disadvantage tries to find sympathy and/or justification for their foul actions by calling out the fact that someone else, usually a black person [or insert your minority here], should allow them pass for their insulting behaviour because "the black person/minority knows how it is." As seen in the video below at around the 3:24 mark. Margie is accusing Jen and Kisha of laughing at her son's deafness and trying to shame them into contriteness by calling out the fact that they are black and they should know how it feels. WHAT!!!

How absurd to equate blackness with deafness. How exploitative of his deafness. Luke isn't special, he just can't hear. He's still able bodied, he just can't hear. Equally disturbing to me is the tendency of some in our society to equate the fight for civil rights of African Americans to the current fight for homosexual rights or even better the Feminist agenda. Entirely different issues with entirely different purposes. I think it's really shady to feign empathy with someone for the benefit of having strength in numbers all the while exploiting them with the intent of distancing yourself from them once the battle is won.

I thought Margie was way off base. The fact that Jen and Kisha were black should have never been mentioned. Her comments, obviously were not well thought out and in the heat of the moment, but they were still spiteful just the same. Saying things like, "people like you" made her character obvious. The fact of the matter is Luke was being overly aggressive and rude. Previous shows have evidenced his unsportsmanlike conduct. His being deaf does not give him the freedom to mistreat others. If anyone should know better it should be him. HAH! Reverse Reverse Race Sympathy Card!

I get so tired of people thinking the only way black people can relate is if we dig far down into that deep dark emotionally charged pit of racial angst we all must have. You know the government issued baggage we all got when we were born black...

I've been using this stuff for the last year or so and I still love it. Elasta DPR-11 Remosturizer is one of the best deep conditioners I've ever used and I've used a lot!

Colored Me: FOTD Nude Look

Friday already! Time for another beauty post. FOTD (Face Of The Day) is my nearly Nude Look. Enjoy the video and product descriptions below.

I don't wear foundation often (usually only on reallllllllly special occasions) I prefer to wear loose powder and primer.

Base -

Smashbox Photofinish Primer (Clear) - Helps to reduce fine lines and pores, and provides for a smooth matte finish under your makeup while at the same time diffusing light around your face to minimize imperfections. Because it is oil free it absorbs oil from your face. You can wear this alone or under foundation or loose powder. Lasts all day.

MAC Studiofinish Concealer (NW45) - Applied to any areas of discoloration, blemishes, bags, etc. I prefer MAC's potted concealer because it lasts longer and is not runny, meaning it will stay where I put it, and it provides excellent coverage and blend ability. I also use this as my under eyeshadow primer. You could use Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion but I prefer my concealer instead. I put this on with a brush before I put on other makeup. You could also use your fingers. A little goes a long way.

Iman Second-to-None Semi-Loose Powder (Clay-Medium-Dark) - Evens skin tone, reduces shine, gives skin a silky look. It settles into the skin providing an even and natural look. Apply this with a Kabuki brush or dense bristled blush. You can also wear this over foundation if you prefer. This lasts all day over your primer but if need be can be easily touched up.

Color -

Blush:

Don't skimp on the blush ladies! The blush is where it's at! More than eyeshadow or even lipstick, a well rouged cheek can change your look for the better. Remember to always stick to colors that match your undertone (cool or warm). In this video I'm using Iman's Luxury Blushing Powder in "Allure" which is duo-toned to provide subtle contouring.

Highlight:

Laura Geller Blush (Golden Apricot) - This [highlight] can be your bronzer, your translucent powder, your blush, highlighter pen, etc. Highlighting does just that, highlights certain facial features. I put this blush over my other blush on the areas where natural light hits to give my face a subtle glow and to catch light on my cheekbones. Try MAC Minerlize Skinfinishes, or even a Rimmel bronzer.

Eyes:

Lid - MAC (Bronze)
Crease - MAC (Corduroy)
Browbone/Arch -MAC (Arena)
Eyeliner - MAC (Chestnut) didn't mention on the video

Try to always use a natural color that resembles your Browbone unless you're going for a really dramatic effect otherwise you could look really harsh.

Liner:

MAC Eyeliner (Chestnut) - a quick tip, putting on your liner before your eyeshadow and smudging deepens the color of your eyeshadow and for smokey looks, it enhances the smoke. I only line the top during the day but all over at night.

Mascara:

DiorShow Waterproof (Jet Black) - this mascara really does lengthen, thicken, and curve my lashes. Never runs when I'm crying. A really excellent inexpensive version is Maybelline Colossal Volum' Express ($7). During the day to keep my look less dramatic I only apply black mascara to my top lashes. I either leave my bottom lashes alone or apply a lighter color like Loreal Bare Naturale (Black Brown) to soften my look but extend my bottom lashes. For an evening out, I put on two coats of my blackest black mascara on both the top and the bottom.

Lips: Apply Vaseline or lip conditioner first.

MAC Liner (Chestnut) - line and rub your lips together to spread. Apply color and reline if necessary.

MAC Lipstick (Chelsea) - wear with or without liner. Great nude color for pecan-colored girls!

Finish -

Spray a little MAC Fix+ into the air and walk under it. Helps to set makeup for the entire day. Use under or over makeup.

Most of these products you can pickup at Sephora, Ulta, MAC, and maybe even your local drugstore. Enjoy!

Colored Me: A Makeup Quickie

I got this sweet comment on my last Hairplay post and thought I would share it with you all.

First I must say that your makeup is fantastic, you look so beautiful. I'm
about the same shade as you but I feel like a clown when I try to wear it. I
was wondering if there was a special brand you use and if you could point me
to some books or websites on how to apply it properly so I don't end up
looking like Bozo.

On occasion I get questions from people regarding my makeup and what products I use and I thought now would be a great time to share my techniques. I don't have many as I'm still a newb myself but whatever I have I'm willing to share. But first, let me go on a tangent.

Keep it simple and slow and always stay aware. For me it's always about keeping things simple. I don't have time for much else. Plus I get bored easily and have a tendency to waste money on stuff I don't need if I don't pay attention. Makeup is one of those really dynamic arts that you can easily get lost in. For blushes and lips, start slow by picking colors that are close to your complexion but with just a hint of color and branch out from there. For eyes, try colors that look good on your skin in clothing form.

As with most things - stay aware. Treat makeup counters as you would grocery stores. Never go to them hungry or in need of a pick-me-up. The artists will eat you alive, pitching all sorts of stuff that would work best on the set of Girlfriends and not in real life. Also, when you are in need, you can't always readily tell that Sunbasque and Margin are practically the same color and that one is just a little cooler than the other. Makeup companies are always trying to get you to buy the latest greatest shade of this, formula of that, etc. MAC is notorious for offering new collections with only slight color variations in the shades or repackaging last year's colors to make them look new and fresh this year. If you stay on top of your personal collection you'll avoid having four of the same color.

But to answer your question, I used to feel the same way when I had just started wearing makeup. The key for me, I've learned, is to stick with shades that are similar to my undertone. I have warm undertones. Women of color can easily wear pretty much any color under the sun, we just have to make sure we wear the right hue (shade/tint). Every color comes in a spectrum of cool and warm shades. For example take pink. Within pink you have the coolest blue-pinks (similar to Barbie pink) and you have the reddest-pinks bordering on hot pink and Fuchsia. I stick to the warmer shades. The cooler shades wash me out and make me look bland. I could go on and on and show you a color wheel but quite simply, I wear a lot of warm hued colors such as gold, copper, reddish pinks, purples, deep teal blues, lots of different greens, and even oranges.

Not an April Fools joke. I really don't like it! Folks are probably cursing me right now. But oh well. Twitter probably irks me because I don't fully understand it. How can anyone find the most mundane details of someone else's life so interesting? I don't like being that connected. The telephone ring gets on my nerves. In my mind I'm thinking, 'what in the world? Don't these folks know I'm reading, or knitting, or picking my boogers and scratching my tail and now is not the most opportune time to call?' But then again... If I was Twittering, twit'n, twot'n or whatever you call it, then they would know that. Twitter is like to cooler trendier version of the Big Brother eye in the sky.

I'm just saying folks (those prone to lying) better be careful with Twitter. Twitter gone get between a whole bunch of folks and their money and their honey. Too much history being saved on Twitter.

But I'm jus sayin. I feel like this dude.

Parents!!!

Please please please teach your children the value of saying and showing thanks! I'm not talking about any particular incident or any particular person, just children as a whole.

Children need to learn gratitude. When a gift is given to them regardless of the mode of delivery, a child should show thanks. Not the parents, but the child. Or in some cases the child in addition to the parent. When I say, 'mode of delivery' I mean regardless of if the gift came from a co-worker to the parent to give to the kid or some other person offered to pay (and the parent accepted)for something on behalf of the child. The child should still say thank you unless the parent is trying to keep it on the low-low or unless the gift-giver had ulterior motives.

Put the child's cursive/handwriting skills to good use. They learned it for a reason. Get them some thank you cards or even some wide-ruled lined paper and sit them down to write a Thank you note. Let em color a picture and put their name on it and some stickers. Whatever!

I'm getting so tired of parents saying thank you for kids that are of the age to be able to do it themselves. I'm so tired of parents ad-libbing for their kids and telling folks how much their kid loved a toy. Your kid couldn't verbalize that? Babies get a pass because they can't verbalize. But anybody that can speak up on some food (by name) can say thank you.

What happened to parents filling in the "please" and "thank you" for kids when they forgot to say it? Sheesh!

This Just Irks Me

Most times I don't post because I'm just plain busy. Other times its because I wonder if the things I think about are relevant or just critical. I am a critical thinker and not in the critique judgemental form, although I do a lot of that too, but in the child-like "Why?" form. I dissect things constantly to get at the root of them. My natural tendency is to teach and simplify.

Although I try to think hard before I speak and season my words with love I often come off as high-minded and judgemental. The truth: I am high-minded, but no longer haughty or arrogant. I think on a higher plane. Not a plane unto myself mind you but one that constantly challenges my level of contentment versus my level of complacency. Naturally those around me receive some of the settling dust within my mind. I don't think I'm better than anyone, contrarily I strive to be "the least of these."

Most times when you are trying to serve others you don't get to talk about yourself - your fears, concerns, doubts, worries, desires... What irks you. You spend a good amount of your time listening and nurturing the dreams of some others. In this mode you can easily become angry, especially when you realize some people just don't want to change. Eventhough you try to love people where they are (in hopes that they will do the same for you) it doesn't always eliminate the bad after taste left in your heart. I refuse to be angry anymore. I want to talk about me.

My disclaimer is not meant to be heavy but more light-hearted than anything. Starting tomorrow I'll be back on my blogging game and will start a new column called "You Know What Irks Me?" I'm a start blasting stuff folk do. Myself included. Some will make you think, and some will make you mad. But trust, you'll more than likely be able to relate. The insanity must stop.

The President, Fair Trade, and the Growth Initiative

Today the Prezzy prez, that is Obama, touched down today in Long Beach right outside my office. Folks were lined up all along the streets and in the tunnels. Our parking lot was full of cars that didn't belong to any of the employees that worked in the business park. Folks in the building were excited and giddy. From our office we had a birds-eye view through the windows. The new Air Force One is a very pretty plane. Very sleek and colorful. He landed, jumped on Marine One and was escorted by 3 other helicopters to Costa Mesa. Just a little excitement for the day.

Now back to me. Today is Day 4 of my personal Protective Style Challenge. On Saturday I braided my hair into a gazillion little box braids that I plan to keep up for 3 weeks to a month - repeat. Every night I will moisturize them with my rosewater mixture and baggy the ends. By following this method I hope to be better able to retain my ends and see increased length. At the end of this month after I rebraid I will show progress picks. My goal by the end of this year is full armpit length or just below. I'm being hindered by occasional scalp flair ups in the back area where I had alopecia, which leads me to my next topic.

I wanted to show you my recent haul. I love it when I get boxes in the mail. A couple of weeks ago I infused Castor oil with fresh rosemary and sage leaves. I wanted to see if I could get better effects with a fresh infusion vs. an essential oil mixture. So far so good. I'm loving the Castor oil mixture so I bought a few other treats to try. In a later post I will explain what each of these herbs are and their uses. I may even post a video.

From Mountain Rose Herbs I got the following organic fresh dried herbs: Lemon Balm, Chamomile Flowers, Peppermint Leaf, Rose hips, Nettle Leaf, Horsetail, Burdock Root, and Dandelion leaf. I plan to try some new oil infusions and make tea. I also ordered some fresh unrefined cocoa butter. Many of these items are Fair trade.

During this challenge I also plan to start hennaing my hair more often. One place I've used before and gotten great results is Mehandi. This time I'm not really going for color (my hair is darker than it has every been and I love it) but strength and conditioning. I bought two packs of the red label for African Hair. Mehandi has excellent henna that is finely sifted, smooth in texture and deposits great color. Also the prices are very reasonable. 200g cost me $14 with shipping.

Lastly, I picked up some yarn. I loved the Cycling Aran so much that I decided to make one for myself. My LYS Compatto Yarn Salon was having a sale and I got a spiffy deal on some Debbie Bliss Cashmerino. I plan to start working on this soon but it may have to wait until school is out.

I'm Still Alive

But school, work, and life have been kicking my butt! I'se been too tired to do much of anything extra-curricular to my schedule. I'm in the midst of mid-terms and my English professor is an essay-Nazi. Chick wants an essay, EVERY WEEK! Plus 3 smaller ones (she calls them responses) to other folks essay. YOUR THE TEACHER! YOU READ THEM! I've got 2 other classes. But it's all cool. I'm just trying to keep my head above water.

Lately I've been rapt with YouTube. Posting and Parlez vousing over there. I do have some craft projects to share. I did another Blue Curacao shawl for a coworkers grandmother-in-law. She turned 90.

I'm also working on a sweater from Knit n' Tonic's Wendy Bernard, called the Favorite Cardigan. I'm working on the sleeves but I've since gotten lazy. I'll post pics soon.

MAC Hello Kitty Event!

Let me just say that me and my girls had a ball! Well at least I did! MAC did it up for the release of their new Hello Kitty collection launch and we were in the house at the South Coast Galleria here in Southern Cali.

It was really one of those events where it was what you made it. The anticipation and the crowd interaction is what made it fun and exciting. The collection itself, to me, was kind of average but the atmosphere was fun. I got an invite and RSVP'd for 8:30pm. We got there at ten till 8 and the line was already about 100 people deep due to the fact that MAC not only mailed out invites but, possibly to combat the economy, they also did an email blitz which sent the turnout overboard. They had anticipated a return of about 50% but they nearly had 100%. That equates to nearly 500 people waiting.

We stood in line for nearly 2 hours including the deep standing room only crowd once we actually got in the store. The manager and staff though were all fabulous and so helpful and sweet. They made sure that nearly everyone who came got in even when the mall management threatened to shut the event down. The store itself was like a sauna because the mall had turned off the AC. For hors d'oeuvres they served chocolate bow tie cookies, cucumber sandwiches, and mushroom and Gruyere cheese pastries. For drinks they served mixed drinks with gin and some with pink lemonade and vodka. I don't drink so one of my girls held mine for me *wink *wink.

After standing in that long line and gabbing it up with the staff I ended up buying only one thing from the line which was the Deep Blue Green pigment. The other items I got were from the Brunette, Blonde, and Redhead collection or general MAC; a lipstick called Frenzy, the Mineralize Finish in Gold Deposit, and a lovely orange blush called Devil. I'm contemplating taking the pigment back. I don't think I really need it. Heck, I don't need any of it. I think I just don't want it.

So suffice to say we had a ball. Unfortunately when I got back home I had a crazy sinus attack which kept me home from work today.

Crazy event with mad crazy spending. Last night's event just solidified in my mind that I need to go on a spending diet. I spent a $100 which was paltry compared to the $500 and $1,000 that others were spending. But, I plan to cut back on all purchases save for groceries, gas, and health necessities for the remainder of the month of February and possibly into March until my birthday. I don't want to start becoming out of control. I have way more makeup than I'll every use. I did have fun though...

Happy MLK Jr. Day!

We often take for granted events that have made radical changes on our lives. We like to be nostalgic all the while forgetting and ultimately putting our own spin on how things actually happened. Sometimes we get caught in the hype and pandemonium but never actually get the true message. The 1963 March on Washington is one such case. Although I had not been born, I still have benefited greatly from the event.

In my mind I know the high points of the speech delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on that day, "I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character..."Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!", but unfortunately those were all I knew. I know I'm not alone. How many of us as adults have taken the time to conciously listen to this speech? Through critical examination have been able to discern if the dream has actually become a reality and if not why? Here's some help:

Bentonite Clay or "Natural Calcium Bentonite" can be used as an agent to absorb excess sebum, clearing pores. It may be used like a shampoo trapping and removing dirt, debris, build up and other particles from your hair and scalp. You can use this on natural, relaxed, and loc'd hair. Check out more details here at AnitaGrant . I bought mine at my local health food store for $4.99. You can buy the Hibiscus (Jamaica) at your local ethnic grocery store in the produce section.

How to:

This is now a part of my monthly routine. I plan to use this twice a month to clarify and detox my scalp. It left my hair so soft and manageable. I highly recommend it.

Moot Points & Stitch Markers

I was going to write this dissertation about the recent elections and the now President-Elect Obama's successful election strategy and docket of policy changes. But I decided that RawDawg and a few of his well read readers surmised my thoughts up well, so I now render rehashing my thoughts here MOOT.

Suffice to say, politics here on my page was a bit of an anomaly anyways (I convey much better in person). Even though, I didn't support Obama at the polls I am happy to have lived in a season where a black man has been rightfully elected as president of the US. The fight for equal rights in America is far from over, but at least we have a picture of what could be, aside from ideologies.

I am looking forward to seeing the contrast of black upon the White House. A more colorful (no pun intended) and engaged First Lady as opposed to her many stiff upper-lipped vacuous predecessors. I wonder what her platform will be. She strikes me more as Barack's inconspicuous Regent than First Lady. Can't wait to see her on the cover of Vogue. I'm looking forward to him relaxing so we can really see who he is. More personality as opposed to charisma (I hate using that word to describe black people, but it's true).

Didn't vote for him, but I respect and love God and so therefore will support him insomuch as his policies do not cross those of God. For it is God's will that he won. In saying that, I respect those who have charge over me and will do my part to show a united front within and without America. Just as with Bush, Barack Obama is our President-to-be and it is incumbent upon the citizens of these here United states to support, encourage, and pray for him, his family, and those in his cabinet even if we don't necessarily like him or the policies he's championed.

Grown Folks At Play

I love it when grown folks can humble themselves and play like kids. Seeing them so intensely focused on an arts and crafts project just lifts my spirits. I think that's why I love the the crafty community. We are forever creating with wide-eyed excitement just like kids.

Some of you may remember how not to long ago I was really down about my current work state; a mix of boredom and anger. I was seriously considering getting a new job and leaving these folks behind. Well wisdom pervailed. I decided to stay and not look to be served by my company but to serve them more. Sometimes our expectations from a company (and by extension it's employees) are too high. Just like a love relationship, we expect them to fulfill certain needs they're not designed to fill (i.e. self fullfillment, affirmation, acceptance), change who they are (change the company culture to suit self), allow you to control them (accepting only your ideas as sound), and be like the boyfriend before (have the same programs/fringe benefits we loved from the previous company). It doesn't work in a love relationship and it most definately will not work at work. Somebody has to change. I choose me! Hopefully others will be so inspired to serve more as well.

I joined the new Morale Committee at work. We're responsible for, well, lifting the morale of our department. We put on events to foster teamwork and the cohesiveness amongst the various groups that make up our department. Our first event was Halloween. Eventhough I don't celebrate it, it didn't hinder me from helping to oversee the festivities to lift the morale of the team. We had a costume contest, candied apples, and a pumpkin decorating contest. Check out how creative we all got, without carving! Grown folks at play!

Stuff and Stuff and some more Stuff!

McCalls 5250 High-Waisted Slacks

Love them! Got lots of compliments on them. These slacks were soooo comfortable.

Pattern: McCall's 5250 High-Waisted Slacks
Material: Tartan Grey Metallic Suiting
Notions: 9" zipper, flat hook closure
Mods & Notes: I had planned to fully line with Posh polyester from JoAnns but while sewing I had a tearing mishap. I may go back later and add lining. I originally cut these out in muslin to get the proper fit. Which I now use as a sort of sloper. Added about 3" to the length. Have to learn how to do a better hidden zipper. Took a little extra time to match the pattern and lengthened the belt carriers by 1" each to accomodate wider belts.

Results: I really love these pants and got many many compliments on them today. Only drawback is the side seam pockets don't lay as flat as they could causing puckering. I may go back and stay stitch them to the outer seams. The pattern is easy and requires little to no guesswork. I highly recommend.

Now if I could just sit down and finish the dang ole sweater AND write out the pattern. I dream big and in color. I seem to be slipping back into some habits I thought I had long left behind. Procrastination and not finishing. I'm going to hold myself accountable on this one. Hopefully I'll have a progress pic in my next post.

Spoiled!

I couldn't tell it if I tried! Ya'll just dont' know how good God has been to me all my life. I can't tell you because there are no words in any human dialect that can express how much I love Him. God is truly my first husbandman and He spoils me with His brand new mercies everyday. Just waking up every morning is a new blessing I don't even have to think about.

As a single woman, whom God has kept directly off the dating scene for a number of years, I have never in my life been more spoiled by any previous lovers. Here's some examples:

I asked God in prayer for a vacation (eventhough I hadn't worked in over 2 years and had no money). God blessed me with a free cruise to Mexico.

In response to what I wanted for my 30th birthday a few years back I responded with "pearls." I got a full strand of freshwater pearls and earrings.

The birthday before that, some sisters and I went to one of my favorite restaurants in Beverly Hills. We were having a great time! At the end of our meal the waiters sang to me and told us to have a great day. Then our waiter went on about his business. When we asked him twice where our check was, he told us (twice mind you, cause we didn't believe him) that a gentleman across the room had paid our check. The gentleman also told the waiter to tell me, "Happy Birthday!" Talk about your heart burning because his motive was only to make our day and not pick up on anyone. I believe that man was my Lord.

During the season where I was losing everything in order to come closer to God, I almost got evicted from my apartment. God said no and the judge threw out the case because the landlord had overcharged me $2.50!

In that same season I lost my truck and God allowed me to go to a large well known car dealership and get a car that wasn't 2 years old yet for free. Yep FREE! I paid nothing for it and hold the title to this very day!

My most recent expression of His spoiling love happened this weekend. I had been thinking about buying some Gucci sunglasses (ya'll know I likes me some Gucci), but because I wanted to be a good steward of the monies I've received, I decided to wait until the end of the year. Well look what my beloved got me:

I was strolling through Tarjay on yesterday, looking at the sunglasses. I'm just trying on various pairs when I come across this pair and they fit me perfectly. I thought it was odd that they were labeled differently (a big fat sticker directly on the lens) instead of a hang tag. The logo looked slightly Gucciesque but for $16.99 I could only dream. I buy the glasses and think nothing of it until I get in my car this morning and decide to actually look at them. I got REAL Gucci Havana sunglasses that retail for over $200.00 for $16.99! Serial numbers and e'rethang. I know knocks when I see'em and these ain't them.

CAN YOU DIG IT?!!

He's so good to me! It's not about the material things He gives me. But the love I feel when I draw near to Him. He truly does perfect those things which concern Kamika. I would be a fool to not give Him praise.

Wow! I haven't had a knit or crochet FO since June. So as not to come off as a slacker (which I totally am), I too like many other knitters, just haven't felt inspired to knit. I have been crafty in other areas though. Pics to come.

Anyhoo, I finally finished the #4 Ribbed Top from Vogue Knitting Spring/Summer 2008. So without further adieu:

#4 Ribbed Top by Vladimir Teriokhin

Time: June -October 2008
Yarn: Malabrigo Silky Merino, 5 hanks (approx. 750 yds) in Teal Feather
Needles/Hook: 6US
Modifications: Started the entire set of center cables 6 rows later than called for. This ensured that the cables wouldn't disect my bust at an awkward position making it look as if I had 4 breasts instead of 2.
Notes: Now this was a booga bear If I'd ever seen one. I had to rip out half the back over 5 times just to get it right. If you're going to try this one make sure you read the pattern through with caution. and comprehension. You know reading is fundamental. ;-P

My next projects already on the needles. I'll keep you posted.

I normally don't discuss politics here. I think who on and why someone decides to vote is their personal choice. Needless to say I'm not happy with either candidate, McCain nor Obama. Nor am I happy with our political system that about 8 months ago registered nearly 200+ candidates of varying parties but in the spirit of democracy only decided to spotlight those with money.

No, I'm not a big fan of McCain and his trying so hard, frigid, fashionista Budweiser girl-like wife, nope. Nor am I a fan of Michelle Obama running for president but under the guise of her far less accomplished less experienced husband all because he has testicals and America is not ready for a BLACK WOMAN president. (Yes, you read it right. America is not ready for black women to shine, etc. etc. etc.) Eventhough I think sister-girl is fierce. I think their campaign is contrived and somewhat farsical and the Obamanians are more treacherous than the stans of Beyonce.

But those aren't the issues I wanted to discuss today. I received an email on yesterday that showed pictures of Sarah Palin in various states of undress; holding rifles while wearing Old Glory, booty butt-naked on the cover of an old newspaper, and all tarted up a la penthouse with a head so big and ta tas extra flat and 3 shades of difference in the skin tones. I replied that these pictures looked photoshopped to death! These pictures were later found by another recipient to be fakes. Was this email sent for a good laugh? I don't think so, as the previous senders commented as if they believed the pictures were real.

I opine, it's a shame Americans are more concerned with the character of others but so easily slip their foul, stealing, lying, shameful, and perverse ways under the rug for a chance at being included in the coversation at the grown folks' table. Blessing and cursings coming out of the same mouth. It bothers me that we have to unconstructively tear candidates apart as a rite of passage in order for them to run for any office let alone the presidency like America is this huge fraternity. It bothers me that Americans gossip, snicker, and pass around salacious words without researching them first. I think there is a lot of deception in the atmosphere and that we need to be more aware and stop casting stones. Everybody's hands are dirty! Thus is human nature.

I'm extremely late for work, so I guess I'll have to end my intended short commentary without thoroughly fleshing out that last paragraph. I'll try to expound on it more later. I love America. It truly is the land of the free...and reviling.

A Lil of This & A Lil of That

As I sit here coming down off my sugar ecstasy, I figured I bet to get to writing. Not much to talk about but much ado about nothing. Nothing No. 1 being that I haven't had sugar in my system for nearly 3 weeks and have dropped about 10lbs. Sugar is cryptonite and crack all rolled up into one. When I'm fiending for sugar I start looking like Pookie from New Jack City. I'll beat a negroe down for some sugar. I'll cut em if it's got some pecans mixed in. Look at me, giving away all the details. But my Coffee Lovers from Coldstone was good.

No. 2, I hit my 3 year nappiversary on August 28th. I've gone from bald, afflicted with alopecia, to very thick and boring. Yes, I said boring! I need to find a natural stylist to take me and my hair to the next level. I got growing it on lock (eventhough advice is always welcome), what I now need is someone to take my styling back to FLY level, so I can feel more put together. Anybody know of a good stylist in LA that's into hair CARE and styling? It's gotta be both. Patrice asked me about a year ago if I ever straightened. Below is about as close as I get at home. I may consider flat ironing more often though just for a style change. I'm coveting that Chi iron.

No.3, been shopping waaay too much! Peep some of the products I bought. Can you say CHI's my baby daddy and I got the hair to prove it? LOL. I'm so in love with Chi products now. Talk about great slip and moisturizing. You don't need a lot of these products, so a 12oz bottle could probably last you a couple of months. An added bonus is that they smell like a really good smelling mens' cologne. I plan to do a review of them soon.

Stopped at Sephora and got some great makeup on the same outing went down to MAC in Nordstrom's and allowed myself to be bamboozled into a whole bunch more of makeup. I came to my senses just before I was about to plop down another $150 to buy FlowerBomb perfume by Viktor & Rolf. As an aside: At both of these stores male clerks (I know, so passe, but what are they called now?) were rocking the latest in makeup accoutrement. I mean full face with a swish. I was weirded out. It wasn't even dark outside yet. LOL, I kid. I don't think I took pictures of it all.

I may get that FlowerBomb this weekend though.

No. 4, I did my first weave. On DM. For Free. She called it free advertising. I called it slavery revisited. She said, "I'm your momma and I deserve it." To which I responded, "You lying lady!" (in my head of course). She's rocking it though. She refuses to wear her own hair. I have greater respect for stylists now. I'm now at her house every weekend washing and curling her up like she Patti Labelle or somebody. I will not be making this a side hustle. I need my hands to knit.

No. 5, I done did something crazy with my latest knit project that I don't even feel like discussing now.

No. 6, a fellow blogger asked me why he wasn't in my blog roll. Cause shadetree, I ain't even been to my blog let alone updated my blogroll. Besides, you're in my reader and that's all that matters. Home is now home again. For a minute there I was seriously contemplating moving. I just couldn't handle the bugs. I believe I may have been having an anxiety attack that was triggered by the bugs and my emotional (suppressed) state after the funeral. Jeeves came over and fixed the problem - one of the sub floors under my closet was exposed and cracked. Since my apartment is directly over the gutter, the bugs were finding there way in through my closet. There was no way I was going to be able to tolerate bugs crawling on my clothes let alone in my home on a regular basis.

The area you see below is where the built-in drawers have been pulled out and this is what was behind them. Jeeves came in and drywalled the wall in and sealed the sub floor.

Large bugs to me are the equivalent of snakes and mice to others. The sound of the crack of a water bug,when stepped on, sends chills up my spine. One came out of my closet and I got the strength to run and get a broom to kill it. It became a war cause it just wouldn't die. I finally swept it outside half dead where it remained on the porch until my sister-in-law SDJ came over (with DM and Jeeves) and full of angry fear stepped on it hard!

Earlier, I hadn't realize I was in such a bad state until I called DM to ask her to send Jeeves over and I couldn't stop crying enough to tell her what I needed. I had to call her back. I went for my morning jog but decided to walk instead and I was crying while speed walking. I had to come home and talk to God. I'm and odd griever. Sometimes I can go years without crying or even acknowledging the vacancy a person's death has left in my life. This time though, I was grieving for her and my own heart state.

My grandmother Charlene (we called her Charlena) passed on Saturday, August 2nd. She wasn't my actual grandmother but back 33 years ago, when my mother came to California for a visit and ended up staying, she became my mother's adopted godmother. At that time my mom was a soon to be divorcee and a traveling gospel back up singer. She came to California because my Aunt had brought my older brother (PP) here for a visit and refused to bring him back home to Ohio. My aunt was and still is a bit of a wild child. Long story short I came along, my Grandma Charlena introduced us to her church and my parents have been members there ever since (give or take a few years due to rough patches).

Grandma Charlena's life was my first recognizable glimpse into refinement. I remember having Thanksgiving dinner at her house and the long continuous table that fit probably 20-30, well appointed with every crystal glass, fine bone china, and full silverware you would need and then some. She would throw together at least 15 different entrees in addition to the turkey. I was always so excited. Always in awe.

She was a stately woman who talked a lot of trash and wore a lot of tweeds and fur coats. She enjoyed a good stiff drink and to dance. She'd curse a man out in a minute and wouldn't hesitate to tell you you've gained weight but were still pretty. She was also the person who in a time when kids were learning to be fast tails told me that there was nothing wrong with wanting to be smart and creative. When Mrs. Adams around the corner taught me to crochet, it was Grandma Charlena who I practiced with. Twice a month or so she would pick me up in her burgundy Lincoln Bonneville or little grey station wagon and we would go "Goody Shopping." Goody shopping is shopping at yard sales. We would get all sorts of little trinkets and yarn.

I'll miss the woman who for my birthday gave me white panties three sizes too big with ones, fives, and tens dollar bills stick pinned into them; although I won't miss the pain I got when I tried to put them on but had failed to remove all the pins. I'll miss being called Lady Bug. I'll miss the replacement of her curse words with "a oomph oomph and an umph umph umph!" I'll miss her, but God's got it all under control.

I Desperately Need A Man!!

Oooh Lawd! I got this huuuuuge water bug in my closet!!! I'm scared to death! I'm so scared I called my Momma who's asleep. I ended up on the phone with my older brother who was cracking up at me. I'm so afraid I'm tempted to run upstairs and get the neighbor to come and kill it for me. I HATE BUGS!!!

It took my breath away and had me fighting air and hyperventilating in my bedroom for a cool 5 minutes. I've been throwing 4" inch heels blindly in the closet to try and knock it down off of one of the hangers. I'm not sleepy no mo! I may end up laying on the couch tonight.

I know tomorrow it may seem funny but right now I'm crying. This is me:

I really wanted to thank all of you who responded to my last post. Sorry it took me so long to get back. I've been a little slow lately and so I've had to take to writing a To Do list in order to get things.

I think I may have come off as arrogant, which was not my intention. I think every now and then something emotional triggers you to look at your current situation and wonder if you are doing all that you should be. Could be. Have you forgotten your dreams and become complacent? Are you redeeming the time or just wasting the talents you been blessed with? Have you lost sight of the mission and so haven't learned enough? And lastly, have you learned all you were supposed to, in this season in this place, and therefore have completed the mission and over stayed your welcome which is why others are working your nerves?

A couple of you hit the nail on the head. Finish the lesson. I did ask My Beloved to work out some ugly things in my character. He in His soveriegnty took care of all the details, including the time, place, and people. I'm not ready to go yet, I still have a few more sections in this chapter to learn. Thanks for the prayers!

Moving on. One of The Motel guests passed last week. I have to pay my last respects tomorrow. I'm really missing her but I believe that the day of one's death is better than the day of their birth (Ecc. 7:1). I'm sure she and God are having a good time catching up in Heaven. bet they're goody shopping. With all the mansions in Heaven, I'm sure they have yard sales.

I made some jewelry and worked on my knitting. More upbeat posts to come.

Getting Restless

I'm getting restless again. It's a mode I get into every couple of years when I feel I need to make a change on the 9-5 front. I'm bored as the dickens and have been having a hard time finding the burst of energy to swing by the Man's house each day. I do get there every morning, although my attitude has been less than stellar. When I get to this point it's usually a quick spiral down into pure judgemental anger against those I work with ending in an all out stalemate.

I hate that about myself. I need to take work and my work environment less seriously but I've always had an issue with being non-productive and having non-productive people around me. I figure since you spend 1/3 or more of your daily life there you need to love it or at least like it. I feel that when I get there I should have things to do that don't drop my IQ 25 points each day. I'm not one of those who likes to come to work and sit around. If you are willing to pay me to do nothing or to surf the Internet, then pay me to stay home. None of this was in the job description.

I don't need to control situations anymore, I've learned that God takes care just fine without my input and usually to my advantage. What I do need is for people to work smart with me and delegate those things which are not their forte before they become chaos. I do not like the voice of our department being the one person who is making the most mistakes and causing delays.

I'm trying to be 100% and not 75% grateful. I need to take this as an opportunity to nip murmuring in the bud and to love people regardless of their shortcomings like others do me. I'm going to working on that today. I'm off as we've had a death in the family and I need to help take care of some business. I'll keep you all posted later.

Question: How do you deal with working in a not-so-ideal work environment? This can include SAHMs as well.

Upgrade Me!

Had an eventful last couple of days. This week was my department's "Team Building Week". Something much needed since in our large department is made up of about 5 or 6 smaller departments that look each other in the face each day but have little to say to one another. The ladies who organized it did a very good job of drawing the silly and friendly competition out of us all. I really commend them for their hard work, not only because I myself had goo gobs of fun participating but I know it's really hard getting a whole bunch of pretentious and insanely political folks to work together.

Each day our groups, chosen at the onset by kiddie puzzle pieces, worked together to solve Olympic-like games such as cake decorating and poster drawing. The week culminated in an picnic outing to a very large park and a tour of our lovely city all on board a classic British double-decker bus piloted by two guys in kilts. Seeing as I don't drink, I wasn't too surprised at how wild we got without liquor. I think some of them were cause they were telling all their business the minute someone looked their way. It was all good though. I didn't take pics.

I don't know if Ihad to but I did go out and buy a new computer yesterday. The other night while watching The Boondocks my trusty old computer tried to give up the ghost. It froze on me and said I had a registry error. I resuscitated it but after restarging it made me reenter the Microsoft key and told me it had to restore itself. I knew then that the time had come for me to put my beloved baby to sleep. I had put it off as long as I could. No sense in prolonging the life support.

It didn't help that folks were laughing behind its back every time I talked about it. I began to dread the question, "what are you running?", for fear that I would look out of touch. I would always give my pat answer: "Windows 98, but it's super fast and clean. I've never had a virus, run all the programs I need, and am only looking to upgrade because Microsoft stopped providing support for it nearly a year ago." They would look at me like I was crazy and bust out laughing. Saying mess like, "You don't even have XP?" and "Windows 98?" and "How much memory you got on that thang?" To which I would always want to respond with something smart like, "Does Windows 98 sound like XP?" and "I see you on the memory tip. I'se only got about 11 gigs." The last part alone would make them fall out on the floor again but this time holding the fetal position until they realized how tall and imposing I looked from their position on the floor.

So yesterday I pushed up my scheduled purchasing by about a month and sashayed into Circuit City to look at their units. It would be a unit until I bought it, then it would become my family. I figured now would be the perfect time to buy one because back to school is just around the corner and I should be able to get a good deal. I figured I would hit CC and then swing over to Best Buy to see what they had. I didn't get past my first stop.

After looking at all the "out of box" units (former display units), I settled on 5 that were under $500 dollars. When the manager came over to help me I told him my dilemma. He laughed his sinister laugh. Ha Ha Ha! Then told me that he had to go tell his other manager what I was running, cause that would give him a good laugh and lift his spirits. I didn't know there was a ministry in computer buying. The evidence of God is everywhere. After his bellyrub he told me he felt sorry for me (in much nicer terms) and that he had to bring me up to at least Vista, especially since Microsoft just stop supporting XP about 3 weeks ago. I decided to play the damsel in distress role and appeal to his ego with my Win98 handicap and my obviously somewhat well read knowledge of computers. I was off and running. No batting my eyelashes needed. It was refreshing to him. Silly rabbit!

In the end I won! I left with a computer that was outside of my original 5 choices. The computer I got was $120 higher than the highest I was looking at. He gave me a discount. He offered $100 off so I asked for $120 he agreed. I tried to test my luck at $140 but by that time, he had caught up.

My new fam is a lean mean, computing machine. I now have 720 gigs and can watch high def TV on my computer without squinting. I refuse to pay for cable when the cost of watching TV through your computer is free through your ISP. That's one less bill I have to worry about.

My Paster cooks the best BBQ Chicken Drumettes and warm potato salad. The meat is so tender it falls off the bone. She told me the recipe once, but she said it so fast I knew she didn't want me to remember it. No need to. It gives me a reason to call her and beg.

I like to pack whatever I'm currently working on. I really like to finish projects. I don't recall ever packing too much knitting although I sure do hate sitting through those boring work meetings without my knitting.

I just like getting on planes and landing in a different spot. A plane could take me 10 miles and I would probably pack for a week and be extra excited. With that said, I love New York.

It Just Don't Make No Sense

It takes a whole lot of energy to over manage a project. I'm serious! Ridiculous amounts of energy! I have seen some people micro-manage. Seen them mis-manage. Hell, I know we've all had our fair share of total lack of management. At work. But damn! I never thought anyone could over manage a project. I mean over manage to the point of confusing themselves in the process of trying to remember how to explain to others the who, what, when, where, and why of a project that they only briefly looked at for less than 5 minutes while blindfolded, hanging upside down, with their right thumb in their mouth, and their left hand tied tightly behind their back with dental floss. One sock on and a Birkenstock or is that a Jimmy Choo? Over manage to the point that a simple mail merge becomes all out guerilla warfare dividing the north from the south, of a single department of 4 people (mind you!), Noriega style. The project is still seven months past due and we still didn't get it done today. It's a mail merge!!

Nope! I aint' ever seen it. I hope I never see it again. I betcha I betta not! Thank God, I'm not a betting woman. As my Daddy would say, "If betting was my ho card, I would have put my nightgown on!" I sit here fully dressed in the clothing of the day...

They angered me so today that I had to go out to my car and pray that God forgive me for my pride and my desire for a pistol. Chocolate pistol that is. Milk chocolate. I try not to be violent. I TRY! Lauryn said, "It could all be so simple, but you'd rather make it hard." Alas, workplace theatre. Public Access TV of course...

Well since I'm venting. I ordered these really great cookies from this spot. I think I placed the order on Wednesday. Why the folks just now getting around to mailing my stuff today? Must be that HAT time. Hawaiian Aloha Time cousin to Colored People's Time. Why did they call me on today and tell me they were missing a digit in my zipcode. Naw! Computer's can't be scarce in Hawaii. How else did they get my order? Mapquest anybody? Google maybe? HmmH?

So as not to drag you all down any further. I have been making great progress on the knitting front. I'm half way done with the back of my Ribbed Top by Vladimir Teriokhin from Vogue Knitting Spring/Summer 2008. I'm knitting it up in Malabrigo Silky Merino. Take a look.

I also got some really great Louet Kidlin for Stardust by Tourit Wilroy from Knitty Winter 2007 (?). I was at one of my favorite LYS, The Knitter's Studio, for their summer sale and couldn't stop admiring Litle Owl's sample they had displayed. It was in this great hue of green. She has an excellent post on collar alterations for it if you decide to do this project. The Kidlin is an excellent yarn choice for this project as it is very soft, silky, and as a mohair blended with linen it doesn't have as much loft as a pure mohair would which makes it less fuzzy. Plus the light really catches this yarn at every angle making it more dimensional.

I'm now off to pack up my SP12 gifts. I may post pics here as I seem to always get the partner that is not loquacious, or did I mean non-responsive, or distracted, or forgets to post pics of their swag on their blog. The luck of the draw I guess.

I know the title of this post is a double negative. It must be all that The Boondocks I've been watching. I got to take LB to a pool party tomorrow. I hope she has a ball and falls asleep on the way home. Now she's loquacious.

Hi All! I've been away due to my move and the fact that I still don't have Internet service at my new place yet. Damn! Damn! Damn!Verizon!! I'm going stir crazy. Because of the filters at work I can't blog there either. Be of good cheer though. I have been lurking on Ravelry and viewing blogs via caching on Google. Caching is an option on Google where you can see a sort of screen print of a site without all the pictures and hyperlinks. Unfortunately I can't comment. I'm posting tonight via DM's computer. It's so lacking in functionality.

I plan to be back in the swing of things by the middle of this week. I can't wait to be back in the land of the living (well I'm always living but you know). I am enjoying the peace, quiet, and solitude though. I feel all rested and stuff...

A FO, A Bed, & Some Hope

The Hope:

I'm counting down! Five more days until I'm emancipated from my life of serfdom at The Motel. I can't wait! I've been itching to buy all kinds of stuff to get ready for this move. I've already scheduled a day off, ordered the utilities, and assembled the move crew. I even bought a brand new high tech shower head. DM is a little surly about it but she'll get over it. LB and ST have moved back in as well as The Guest, Jeeves, and The Nut so she'll have plenty of company.

The Bed:

Yesterday I went out and bought a brand new bed! It's so FIYAH. I got it from Z Gallerie le outlet instead of the retail store and I'm so happy I did. I got it for 70% off and it's still in their current catalogue. Can you believe it?

This is my bed, called the Leslie Bed in Chocolate Passion Micro-Suede. The entire bed cost me $325 with tax. On the website it's going for $1,083 with tax and NOT including the shipping of $135. In total I saved a whopping $893. I just can't help but to pat myself on the back.

Forgive the "Front" pic. I have a serious issue with letting my niece's cleavage and belly be exposed and she didn't have time to put on a tank top before work. I believe in modesty, plus my niece didn't wear the collar up. Better pictures to come. Since this is a gift for my cousin Stacey, I'll try to catch her wearing it.

Ah Hah! Say No To Head Buzz

Just recently I did a quick review of Miss Jessie's Baby Buttercream after shouting, "Wait a Minute Mr. Postman!" In that post I praised the results I got from the product and how much I liked it. At the end I did mention one Caveat - I kept feeling slightly light-headed.

Light-headed. Let's explore this sensation for a moment. Walk with me...

Light-headness - a common and often unpleasant sensation of dizziness and/or feeling that one may be about to faint...feeling as though his or her head is weightless. Wikipedia.

After applying the Baby Buttercreme this is how I felt but without the fainting spell. I constantly felt like I was withdrawing from caffeine. You know, that slightly buzzy feeling? Not a tingle ladies. A warm but bearable buzz. But that's just the tip of it. The skin on my forehead started to become inflamed. I also started noticing breakage and more shedding just from touching my locks. A small patch of my hair in the nape area is missing. Yep, just vanished! I know the trees were there because I have pictures and because there is STUBBLE!!! Stubble can only mean breakage. Breakage in an area that I touch a lot (at times I have recurring Hand-In-Fro disease. It's terminal). I haven't had breakage like this since I gave up the relaxer 3 years ago. Now mind you, my hair looked fabulous but at what cost? I had to research this. I also immediately stopped using the product.

The beginnings of my natural hair journey didn't start with the easing in of transitioning. No, I wanted the full trial by fire experience that only comes with the BC. Considering this, I had no problems chucking a product that kept my hair glossy and made my hair appear more acceptable to the masses. NO! But I digress.

After careful research I believe I found the problem. Acetylated Lanolin! Damn Damn Damn! WOOL!!! I'm allergic to pure wool!! **This is going to be a little exhaustive.**

Acetylated Lanolin, also called Sheep/Wool Alcohol or even Wool Oil, is a thick waxy sebum(oil) secreted by sheep to give there coats a glossy sheen and keep the skin underneath soft and supple. When the sheep are shorn the Lanolin is extracted from their coats, cleaned, and processed for use in all kinds of products. Like most other oils commonly used on hair, when applied after moisture, Lanolin will lock the moisture in making your hair feel softer and more moisturized. It's non-drying and the animal variety can be pretty anti-allergenic. You can find it in lotions, lipsticks, lip balms, shampoos and conditioners, and hair products et al.

So you say, "What gives? Lanolin is found in at least 1/3 of the beauty products out there." True, but it's usually found in smaller quantities closer to the end of the ingredients list and only used as filler or an emollient. Acetylated Lanolin is the second ingredient in this product which means there is a high concentration of it. Behind water it's mostly wool oil.

As stated earlier, Lanolin softens, soothes, and nourishes skin but coats and potentially suffocates hair because of it's thickness and binding properties. (The picture to the left is lanolin on a pole) It becomes wax and we all know what happens to wax after it has cooled. It becomes hard and non-porous which means no water escapes it but none gets in as well. Regular use of Lanolin rich products will ultimately cause build-up resulting in hair that drys in on itself because no moisture can enter in to replenish it. The wax attracts dirt and dust to each strand further clogging the hair follicles. Dryness, dirt, and dust are a proven recipe for tangling and hair breakage.

Another major problem. Acetylated Lanolin is slightly different than natural Lanolin in that to be acetylated certain natural molecular properties of the Lanolin are exchanged with Acetic Acid and LYE. Acetic Acid is a mild acid that is corrosive and prone to causing skin burns, eye damage, skin irritation, etc. It descales like Lime A-Way. Naturally found in vinegar it causes the pungent smell and sour taste we are all familiar with. In and of itself Acetic Acid is not really harmful when used in small doses but overtime regular use of it on your hair can be harmful. We all know what LYE is and what harm it can do.

Thirdly, Acetylated Lanolin is highly comedogenic. Meaning it clogs pores and has a tendency to produce or aggravate acne. When using products that contain this ingredient you must be careful to not allow the hair to hang in your face. Nuff said!

So I found my devil in the details. Wool in the form of Acetylated Lanolin. I can't wear pure wool without rashing so obviously the use of it in my hair is no different. My research explained the buzzing sensation and the hair loss I've been experiencing. Since I stopped using it 4 days ago the sensations have left. The remainder of the jar will be put in the "outbox" to be given away to those who are not allergic or trashed.

Baby Buttercream and it's sister Curly Buttercream are useful products, but I don't believe they are for me. I strongly suggest to anyone who may have wool sensitivities or allergies, avoid this product and any product for that matter that has Lanolin in it. If you are prone to acne or facial irritation, avoid using this near your face or placing your hands in your face after touching your hair. If you have found this to be one of your Holy Grail products, I highly recommend incorporating a regular clarifying treatment into your weekly hair regimen followed by a deep moisturizing treatment before reapplying this product. Oddly enough when I started using the product I was cowashing every day to every other day. Cowashing is not recommended with this product. You will only further add to the build-up on your tresses. You need to shampoo.

So there it is. Another Miss Jessie's product bites the dust for me. I'm truly not out to get them, I promise. I've just found that there product line doesn't work for me. I hope this review will be found helpful especially to the product junkies that are fiending to buy these cremes. I will try to find a comparable replacement and if I do I'll post it here. Currently I've gone back to using my Cantu Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioning Repair Creme. It has "Lanolin" in it but it's #14 on a list of about 22 ingredients. As soon as I'm done with this I think I may not purchase it again. Even though I like it a lot, there has got to be something out there that doesn't have Lanolin and a whole bunch of chemicals in it.

Your Opinions Needed

Okay I need your opinion. I'm just about done with the Reverse Halter from Doublestitch that I'm making for my cousin and I've come to a crossroads. You see, my cousin wanted the sweater in orange. I figured burnt orange would be more flattering for her so I knit the bodice in Vanna's Choice yarn in Rust. Unfortunately the pattern calls for the use of Patons Pooch for the bottom area and I decided that since the Pooch didn't come in a comparable color to the Rust that I would use a nice neutral color like Fleece to give her that Bohemian look she tends to like.

Here's my problem. I don't like it! I think the color contrast is too stark. Originally when I was at the store buying the yarn I had resigned myself to just knit it in creme like the picture but I couldn't find any creme yarns that seemed to match. The Patons Pooch is a very yellowy-cream wherein the other yarns were really dull and flat.

So what should I do? Do I keep crocheting to the end with what I've got or should I scrap it all together? I'm leaning towards finishing it because I won't be the one wearing it and it's not hideous, just not MY style. Even though I'll know this I may still be slightly offended if it never sees the light of day.

Mean While, Back At the Ranch

Yippe Kayo, Yippe Kaya! I'm planning on checking out of The Motel this month. My long season of serfdom is almost over. I just can't take it no more! We have far less guests but way more drama of which I probably am the most guilty of. Jeeves has been getting on my nerves like no other. I just can't stand...Well whatever! I'm tired of rehashing the idiocy that is embodied in him. All I know is that there is no time like the present.

I started looking about 3 weeks ago and I think I'm really close to finding the apartment I want. I can't wait to move into peace and quiet. If I ever have roommates again (which I won't unless they come with names like husband and chir'ren) we all better live on the same or similar schedules. I'm a bit neurotic about my quiet time.

It's like relationships. A few differences bring zest and new experiences but too many differences and you got a hell-in-a-handbag bust hell wide open situation. My relations with The Motel has been of the latter. So let's cut to the chase. Who's to blame? ME of course! As if.

You just can't work a 9-5 be on a routine schedule and live with people who have no idea of what a schedule or routine is. It's not their fault. They don't have jobs and so they go to bed at 11pm after an evening of rauckus gossiping, snore like a locamotive all night, and then have the audacity to wake you up at 4:30am with their shuffling and nervous tendencies and singing of old negro spirituals, and more loud talking to only themselves. Going in and out of doors all night like a crack head, testing buttons a new cell phone and being in awe of the speaker phone feature like they just landed on earth all before the rooster has even gotten up. If I was a swearing women I'd say I swear I hear roosters cursing him every morning. If you haven't gotten the picture, let me sum it up for you. Have you ever had someone wake you up 30 minutes to an hour before you actually have to get up? Well there you go. EVERYDAY!

DM thinks it's cute. She ain't gonna think it's cute when I'm gone and he's sleeping in the room next to hers and The Geezers with only a thin wood paneled wall between them. She's gonna really be pissed when I don't give her my new address.

I'm not angry. I'm just counting down the days until I'm gone. I can see sweet freedom on the horizon.

I've been working on the Reverse Halter from Double Stitch. It's going so fast that there's no need to post progress pics. FO in next post.

Berrroco Boho [48% Nylon, 25% Cotton 27% Rayon; Thin ribbon; 98 yds/90m per 50g]
Color: Pastures of Plenty; 3 balls

Cascade Sierra [80% Pima Cotton, 20% Wool; Worsted; 191 yds/175m per 100g]
Color: #08 Green; 3 skeins

Tahki Yarns Dream [80% Wool, 20% Nylon; Fingering; 262 yds/240m per 50g]
Colors: Pale Lime; 1 ball; Light Olive; 1/4 ball (optional)

Needles:
Size: US 11/8.0 mm

Gauge:
13 sts/24 rows = 4 inches worked in 2 x 2 rib (updated 9/9/08)

Stitch:
2 x 2 rib (k2, p2 to the end) No edge stitches needed

Body:
- CO 160 sts. Do not join but work flat

Repeat this for 20 rows

Sleeves:
(For short sleeves) CO 10 sts
(For long sleeves) CO 20 or 30 sts (depending on how long you want them). I cast on 30 and then folded them under in the picture.

Turn work and knit in 2x2 rib back to the other edge. CO the same amount of stitches as the previous sleeve and work 2x2 rib back and continue.

Work flat over all stitches for 38 rows. If you have larger arm circumference (mine are 14") then add on additional rows remembering that 3 rows equals 2 inches.

Row 39: BO all sleeve stitches. Work across to the end.
Row 40: BO all sleeve stitches. Work across to the end.

Resume working back and forth in 2x2 rib for 20 rows. Total of 60 rows.

Edging:
Leaving stitches on the needle and using the same yarn from the other end of the ball or another ball. Fold the piece in half (inside out) matching all edges. Sew the bottom edges of the shrug on both sides. You should have two seams that start at the base of the sweater side and end at each sleeve opening. I didn't use edge stitches but feel free to incorporate them for seaming.

Row 61: Returning to the stitches on your needle. Pick up and knit another 160 stitches on the back side of the shrug (320 sts).

Switch yarns holding together 1 strand of Boho with 1 strand of Dream. Knit in 2 x 2 rib in the round for 4 rows.

Row 65: Work in rib for 6 sts, yo, k2tog* repeat to end
Row 66-70: Work in rib
Row 71: Work in rib for 6 sts, yo, k2tog* repeat to end
Row 72 - 90 work in rib

Bind off all stitches and weave in ends.

My Inspiration - Miss One

I just love this song and Miss One is my girl with her little numbers running self. This song has been known to play on repeat on my iPod.

Introducing OZ! My first wearable design (clothing wise). Once I saw the colors in the Berrocco Boho I just couldn't resist. My family and I loved the result. My cousins even tried to steal it from me. Wear it as I did over jeans or spice it up for the evening. I plan to post the quick and simple pattern for free real soon. Enjoy the pics below.

Time: May 15th - May 25th, 2008
Yarn: Berrocco Boho in Pastures of Plenty, 3.5 skeins (209yds each); Cascade Sierra in Green 08, 3 skeins (192yds each); Tahki Dream in Green, 1 ball (262yds each); Yellow-Green, (approx. 55yds)
Needles/Hook: US 11
Notes: Double stranded the Boho with the Dream in the deep green color for an irridescent look. This shrug is knit flat and mirrored then folded in half and seamed at the edges. I suppose it could be knit in the round until the sleeves, but knitting flat seemed much better. It's entirely 2x2 rib with 2 sets of yarn overs in the trim for detail. The tassles are made with the remaining yarn.

The new Double Stitch - Designs For The Crochet Fashionista book by Erika & Monica Simmons. I preordered this one through Amazon back in April and have been patiently waiting for it up until yesterday. Below are a few items I will be queing up to make. Get yours in the sidebar -->

The book is full of colorful fun knits. Some for rocking around town and others for the sophisticates. I fall into the latter category and as such many are too bohemian for me. The sisters do no disappoint on inspiration though. I think that with a little creativity and a keen study of their designs on their MySpace page you can come up with all sorts of renditions on their already great designs. I really enjoy their stylish departure from the norm of cardigans, sweaters, socks, and pullovers. The stitch is simple but very detailed and decorative at the same time. I am happy to support the Queen's of Crochet Haute Fashion!

The Inaugural Issue of Verena Knitting by Burda (actually store bought). This magazine is really popular in Europe. On the cover it tauts itself as "Europe's top knit magazine." I'm really a sucker for good fashion styling. I try not to succumb to it but I don't think I'll ever change. Good styling is good styling. I guess that's why they do it that way. The magazine is sort of a mix between Rowan and Knit1 - classic designs mixed with the quirky. It's fun and for $6.99 you get 50+ patterns. Below are my faves.

On to hair!! Afrobella announced that Miss Jessie's was having their annual Mothers' Day Sale so I had to check it out. Normally I'm cool on all things Miss Jessies. I tried the Curly Pudding in the past and got a grape scented mess. Plus the price to me was prohibitive for a product I wasn't sure was going to be useful to me. I remember at the time it was $58 for 8oz. The devil is a liar! But, they were offering their Curly Buttercreme at $32 for 8oz AND you got a sampler pack of all of their other products (6 in total) thrown in for free. I figured I had to try it. I bought the Baby Buttercreme and got my order within the week.

I really like the Baby Buttercreme. It really helps with the knots and gives me a silky finish without feeling greasy. I didn't follow the instructions on the website or I would have had a hot greasy mess. You only need a little of this product for it to be effective not globs as the site instructs nor do you need to rake it through your hair with a baby doll size comb. My hair is so fluffy and full after applying just a little to each section and twisting.

Three days later I condish washed and twisted with the Curly Meringue. Meh! I'm not as sold on it. It did give me boingy springy curls but they were not as soft as when I used the Baby Buttercreme. I haven't gotten to the other products yet. All in all I'm very satisfied with the products. I'm happy that I didn't stop with just the Curly Pudding as I would have never tried the Baby Buttercreme. It's about trial and error. The only drawback I'm finding with the line is that there is an ingredient within these products that makes me slightly light-headed. I have to figure out what that is before I continue using. If any of you have experienced the same please do share your thoughts.

In my next few posts I'll post hair pics as well as pics of Oz which is 99% complete. Hopefully I'll have the pattern written up for you as well.

Strange?

Tell me if you think this is strange. Years ago (approx 6 or 7) I Googled myself and came upon a listing of someone with nearly the exact same name and age as me (I don't know her birth date). The only difference is that her middle initial is different. Stranger than strange is that she lives in a part of the south where I have a good amount of family. I don't know them all that well and have only been to the area once but there there. I was intrigued and decided to contact her and left a brief message on her voicemail. She never called me back

Back then I had this crazy urge to be kindred with all the Kamikas of the world. I wanted to read about them to find any similarities or crazy coincidences. It was sort of like being born on the same day as someone else and noticing you are similarly moody etc.

Recently she contacted me via one of my KAL sites. The Knitting Lingerie site to be exact. She explained that she didn't call me back all those years ago because she was afraid of Identity Theft! No diggity! Go Figure! I never responded.

Even more recently I noticed (after Googling of course) that she had left a rather mean-spirited comment on a forum. Here's what she wrote (excerpted from the Tyra Banks Show):

I am very confused, you say it's great to be "black", yet you wear a weave to disguise your african-american hair. My daughter wonders why her hair isn't as pretty as Tyra's. You should be ashamed of saying your a proud black sister, when in fact, your own mother went outside of our race because she too was ashamed. Why don't you just admit being a two-face wishing you were white, instead of getting a nose job, and caking on light make-up to not look so dark. I am overweight, I am never proud of it. I am unhealthy because of my weight, and so will my daughter be if I don't help her have healthy eating habits by making an example of myself. You say everyone is "beautiful" ,but you wear a support so you don't hang out.You try to stay in shape. Why don't you want to look like us "bigger" women if it's so O.K.? I want to know, which message your sending out, big or small, real or fake?... I am just keeping it "real",why don't you?

My disclaimer: THIS IS NOT ME!! I wear my hair natural but others can do what they want to do. Wear your hair how you want it! Shave your hairline and glue as many lacefronts to your head as you want. Cake on the pancake makeup as you see fit and feel free to burn all of your hair out from the root if that's your prerogative. Diversity makes the world go round. I can only show you a more excellent way if you are willing. I will never force it down your throat nor will I choke you to death with nappyheaded dogma. Gone are those days which is why I left a well known hair site alone. What I'm inclined to do may not be for you!

Now Identity Theft is always in the back of my mind, but at this point I think she is legit. If you saw my credit report you wouldn't want to steal from me. But! I do think it's strange, naw'mean?

A Sentimental Child on Mother's Day

Not just my sentiment but that of many after a holiday such as Mother's Day is that mothers should be honored everyday. I totally agree. After thinking about all that I've gone through in my life, I've found that my mother done done good! She wasn't always likeable, understandable, or what I thought I wanted in a mom (as if I had a choice) but she was the best mom for me.

I've learned a lot from the Old Girl and have avoided many a mistake due to her sacrificing herself and making the mistake for me. Oft times she was the coat over the puddle that I walked on. Lying down head first into the water so we never even knew it was there. I would often say, "Wow that's a pretty coat. I wonder who left it there." On occasion, I picked it up and brought it home to clean.

So here's to my once upon a time Go-Go dancing homegirl. We took a brunch cruise.

Did I Sleep With You Last Night?

Remember when your momma used to say that to you when you woke up in the morning and didn't say hello? Oh Hello! Yes, Mert (short for Martha) is old skool. It's sad when it seems like everytime you come back to YOUR house you have to explain to folks where ya been and why you been gone so long. Dang! I am GROWN! Although I am living in my parent's house and too lazy or is that too tired and unmotivated to move out. Most of the other boarders have gone so it's been pretty much smooth sailing. I guess I'm just deceiving myself.

Back to explaining where I been and so on. I'm talking to my blog readers not my mom. She doesn't tread to closely to my personal business and when she does, I just ignore her. Then again, she doesn't need to. I'm pretty predictable and regimented. It's only on the weekends that I turn into a hoe-bath taking Hussy! LOL! Actually, I wish! Not the hoe bath part. I likes to bathe in tubs and showers and put on fresh, well you know...

I was gone 5 days shy of a month. I missed my own blogiversary. I think I was a little afraid to come back. Does that say how I am in relationships?

Work is really draining my energy. Mental drains are waaay more tiring than the physical. When I get home at night I barely make it over the threshold before I want to fall face first into the carpet and stay there until morning. It's as if all the "special" projects at work have turned into my actual job. These crazy things have become endless. Sometimes I feel hood-winked.

I have been knitting and combing my hair though! Shew! It'll take a nation to hold me back. I'm working on my own shrug design which I think I'll call Oz. Peep the picture below. I'm much further than it shows but I was too lazy today to take another pic. It should be finished by this weekend and I'll post it then and the pattern when I get a chance.

I finished steeking the Deep V Argyle vest and got distracted. Here's some pics of my progress. I'll get back to it soon.

Well look at it now.

It's more like Button still in that same wonderful (blah, blah, blah) Malabrigo. I don't know what I was toking on that day, probably long dormant energy, but I shrunk it in the dryer. Words cannot describe my face when after realizing that I had left it in for longer than 5 minutes, I opened the dryer and saw this miniature. LB (remember my 8 yo neice I dubbed Lying Butterfly?) would love it. Would because she's living in Las Vegas now and has absolutely no use for it out there! Oh well, I bought some more Malabrigo in this pretty peachy-orange color and I plan to make another Buttony but this time a perfect fit. Lesson learned: Malabrigo felts really nicely.

Isn't it pretty!? I realize my creature-of-habitness shows up in my choice of makeup colors. I needed to get the case so I could prove to myself that I always seem to buy the same colors.

I think I may plunk down the $1,890 to buy this bag. It's up there, a little materialistic, and prolly not worth it. But I want it and since I don't have a car note or market rate rent, it's justifiable. We'll see if I come to my senses. I just love Gucci.

I tested some of this at Sephora. Smashbox Photofinish. This is a great product. I use it under my foundation but mostly under my loose powder instead of foundation. Love it! Love it! Love it! With this summer's heat sure to be high enough to melt your makeup off. This with loose powder or bronzer, is a great alternative.

I went back and redid the collar on the Cycling Aran again. The cashmere/wool blend, still wasn't stretching enough even in the rib so I reknit it in the same Blue Sky Alpacas yarn as the rest of the body. I then realized that I didn't like how the zipper looked on the inside so I knit a facing to cover it on both sides. It turned out really great and gave the sweater an even nicer finished look.

On another note I started an Etsy store for my jewelry and stitch markers. I haven't gotten around to decorating it yet but when I do I'll let you all know.

Wow I feel like Uncle Spiderwick from the Spiderwick Chronicles. For those of you who haven't seen the movie (or read the books), he is whisked away from the human land to faerieland by the Sylphs who are holding him captive to protect the knowledge he has... Anyways while in captivity he has not aged nor is he aware of the time that has passed. Hence, the last part is what I'm trying to get to. I didn't realize I had been away for so long. Life got a bit overwhelming for a moment but never out of control.

Work has been kicking my butt! We are swamped with special projects that are taking forever to complete. Not to mention that I'm still trying to grasp how to do my job! I'm trying to gain the same level of confidence I had when I worked in Real Estate but it's a slow go in healthcare. Maybe I need to give myself more credit. But I know that through God all things are possible. There! I'll give Him the credit.

Eventhough I haven't been posting, I have been taking pictures like I was. So when I get the energy I will most definately edit those and put them up. I'm really tired when I get home from work, but now that I'm taking my vitamins again, and started back to exercising that should change shortly.

I'se gainfully and permanently employed now!! Picture me saying this in my Sophia from Color Purple voice. Yes yes, I was offered a permanent position and I'se took it. I'm now a Contract Specialist for a Health Care company. Insurance kicks in in 30 days. Can't wait. I want some more glasses. After being out of the work game for nearly 3 years it feels good. Praise God!

I meant to post pics of my Deep V Argyle Vest progress on yesterday but I ran out of time. So here it is! I'm really enjoying this project. Fair Isle keeps you engaged and boy am I alert and engaged. I'm enjoying the colorwork ride but I can't wait to apply these new skills to a man's vest. Sidenote: I really would like to do a really chic means knitwear book. I even have a name already. Nunya!

The yarn I'm using is Sublime's Cashmere Merino Silk DK in Clove and Navy. 75% Extra Fine Merino, 20% Silk, and 5% Cashmere. Super soft and silky! I'm itching to pair this vest with a deep navy or periwinkle button down and some nice flowy navy pinstripe trousers. Visions of Chalcedony cufflinks are passing through my mind and some great pointy toe pumps with a killer heel.

Oooh can't wait!

It's MARCH. Yes M-A-R-C-H! My birthday month (yes, shameless birthday plug). I love March and not just for that reason. March signifies the beginning of spring. That Easter is just around the corner; I love all the pretty little dresses and shoes. And ANd AND that Daylight Saving Time (no "s" people. It's not a bank) will kick in soon and I don't have to watch for Depression lurking around every corner. Sunlight is a good thing people in the Government. Who in the HECK gave the governmnet permission to mess with something that God gave and that they can't even touch let alone comprehend? Bring it on back Kamika. I feel so invigorated when I have a few more hours of sunlight. I know I'm not the only one.

B...Really Irks Me!

Blogspot really irks me! I can't stand the extra font changes, terrible spacing, and more than occasional misalignment of my pictures. That includes pictures that are formatted for centering not enlarging on a click as opposed to those that are set for either right or left alignment. Us creative people need to see the details. No you all, I haven't been tipping into Margueritaville before blogging. It's Blogger getting all willy nilly in my prose. I know I could just go in and change ALL of the HTML but I shouldn't have to got on a hunt. Blogging takes long enough as it is.

SO! If you happen to notice any wayward formatting just ignore it. It's Blogger not submitting to my authority on this here blog. Or maybe it's me that has it twisted.

I mentioned yesterday that I had gotten the gumption to make some stitch markers. I'd like to share the first few sets with you. Like I really needed another accoutrement. When I do something I like to have all the gear.

Trying To Be Prolific

This weekend was full of knitting and creating. I had summoned all of my crafting power into my hands in order to finish off as many projects as I could. I was knitting like yarn was endangered. Alas, I didn't finish everything but a lot and I even found time to make some great stitch markers. Check tomorrow's post for pics of the stitch markers individually. Otherwise this would have been a very picture heavy post.

You already know I finished Buttony, and the Brother In Law Hat. I finished the Cycling Aran, zipper and all. I also swatched the Deep V Argyle Vest. I just about finished a scarf I was making to go along with His sweater and hat (I'm trying to use up the remaining 1/2 skein of Malabrigo and 1/2 skein of Blue Sky Alpaca's that I used on the last two projects, otherwise this is entirely to much coordination for me). I started the Oatmeal Jacket from Monkey Suits and I had to keep myself from starting a scarf for my secret swap partner.

The zipper took me about an hour to put in. I didn't want to do it by machine and risk puckering or tearing the stitches ragged.

On my previous attempt I had stitched a simple stockinette lining. When I tried the jacket on a male friend, I noticed that the lining didn't stretch like the collar and wouldn't allow the collar to close. I ripped it out and decided to make the lining ribbed like the color to get the same amount of stretch.

Something To Keep His Head Warm

Time: February 21st - February 22nd, 2008
Yarn: Blue Sky Alpacas Organic Cotton, 1/2 skein (150yds each)
Needles/Hook: US 8 16" circ.
Notions: None
Notes: Found pattern on Kody May Knits. It's called the Brother In Law Basked Weave Hat. Very well written pattern that can be knit in about 6 hours or less. For an adult male's head I would recommend doing, at minimum, 3 repeats of the pattern before starting to decrease. My hat is for someone who is bald so it will fit fine on him but as you can see with my hair in the above pic, it might not be long enough for someone who has a larger head with hair. For larger heads just add more repeats. Kody gives the option to decrease in or out of pattern. I decreased in pattern which, IMHO, gave it a nicer finish at the top.

I plan to make more of these.

V-Day and Buttony Done

I've been so behind in posting pics of my current projects! Forgive me! I am trying a new thing in the morning. I'm still getting up at the crack of dawn but I'm getting dressed earlier so I can start incorporating blogging and eating a complete breakfast here at home before I trek off to work. Both of which seem to be some serious feats. It's hard when you have other vagabounds living in the same house with you. LOL

^^^Look what DM and TG got me for Vday! Threatening works everytime.

I want to first thank my swap partner Sandra for the great swap gift. She and I participated in the Ebony Elite Ravelry group swap this past winter. I was pleasantly surprised when I got my package in time for Valentine's Day and it was all red with great stuff.

I got a skein of Malabrigo, a skein of Misti Alpaca Lace, a really nice oversized button (I may have to find something to make around it, hmmh), some beauty products, some much needed hair bands, Hazelnut chocolate (how did she know I love most everything hazlenut?), and some stylish tissues. I love it and thanks again!

I've also completed a knit project. Almost! I need to stitch the detailing on the sleeves but other than that it's wearable and DONE!

Time: January 28th - February 20th, 2008
Yarn: Malabrigo Worsted Wool in Sunset, 4.5 skeins (209yds each)
Needles/Hook: US 10
Notions: 13 silver Angel Buttons

Notes: Katie Marcus' pattern is really more of an outline on how do do a top down raglan sweater. I would strongly recommend measuring your arm circumference before knitting this. If you don't, you will overestimate the size of your arms in comparison to your bust measurement and end up with baggy arms. I did by about 9 increases, hence the detailing I am now doing on the sleeves to kind of cinch the arms up. I didn't feel like ripping back to the arms to make it right. I added in waist shaping, starting about 2 inches below the armscye join. I decreased 1 stitch on each side every 6 rows 5 times, knit 12 rows, and then increased in the same manner for my hips.

I made my sleeves 3/4 instead of full arm. I think it gives it a nice sweater girl look. I would do this pattern again to make the perfect sweater!

Beautiful Tresses Not Winter Stresses

Winter temps in these parts can be hard on one's hair. Natural or relaxed the cold harsh weather can wreak havoc on your style and on the condition of your strands, leaving it dry and brittle. Styling one's hair in the dead of winter's dry air can cause "Winter Static" -static buildup from products and dry air that leads to tangles, knots, and fly-aways. Good looking healthy hair requires moisture and protection from the harsh winter elements. But in a season that's known to be wet and with your mom's old saying "going out in the cold with wet hair will make you sick" in the back of your mind, how do you get the moisture that you need? By the way, that's not true.

Dry hair and by extension a dry scalp doesn't need much to be re-invigorated. As long as you have water and quality natural products (used in moderation) your hair can sing in the rain, sleet or snow. Here's a few things you should know about keeping your hair gorgeous in every season:

Drink lots of water! I can't stress this enough. Beauty starts from the inside and so do your strands. If your body is not properly hydrated your hair will grow brittle from the root leading to quick breakage and less retainage. Water transports vitamins, nutrients, and hormones throughout your body including to your scalp. It also carries away any toxins. Try to drink as much as half your body weight (in ounces (oz)) in water each day.
Eat your fruits & vegetables. Try a salad a day of dark leafy greens for Copper and Iron, which prevent hair loss, and colorful toppings like Avocado - counteracts slow hair growth, Broccoli - promotes supple and elastic (breathable) scalp, Garlic and Red Onions - rich in MSM Sulfur for strong hair strand structure, and a whole host of others. Not only will you have gorgeous hair but a FABU body and skin to go along with it!

Pre-Condition, Condition, & Deep Condition. Depending on where you live, and the wind chill factor of your locale, will determine how often you can put water in your hair. In really cold areas such as the the east coast and the pacific northwest the weather may make daily washes/rinses prohibitive. Only you can determine what works best for your hair in your area.

Because I'm in Southern California with our temperate climate, I can get away with rinsing my hair more often than others. I say rinsing because unless you've found a good non-drying shampoo (more on that in the future) the sulfates can be extra drying in the winter. To combat this many women create a conditioning regimen for their hair that includes:

>>Pre-conditioning - dry bathing their hair in moisture retaining products such as castor oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, honey, essential oils, and even apple cider vinegar and baking soda. By doing this, you will limit the amount of natural oils made by your scalp, lost during washing.

>>Conditioning - use a moisture rich conditioner either after shampoo or as your shampoo to retain the water from your wash. I'm a big fan of conditioner washing also called no-poo or low-poo. Shampoo is made to cleanse the scalp but can be too harsh for your hair strands, conditioner is made to clean, smooth, and coat your hair strands and retain the moisture. If you don't use a lot of pruducts or if you don't have a problem with build-up no or low-pooing may be the way to go for you. I do this about 2 to 3 times per week and wash with shampoo every 2 weeks (more frequently if I've used a lot of products).

>>Deep Conditioning - combines pre-conditioning and conditioning (low/no pooing) together in one step to be done either after shampooing or after clear rinsing your hair. Mix both of the earlier treatments together, apply to your hair, and for best results apply low heat using a heat cap or warm towel over a shower cap, for at least 15 minutes to open the hair follicles for deeper penetration. Sometimes I even go into the steam room at the gym for an extra conditioning bang. Rinse after and style as usual.
Keep products to a minimum. Too many products and/or too much of a product creates product build-up. Product build-up is like a smothering sludge that sits on your scalp closing your hair follicles preventing them from breathing properly. If your hair is closed and not porose then moisture will not get in. Remember our hair needs as much moisture as possible.

Did you know that too much product can aid in the growth of dandruff, prematurely thin your hair strands, give your hair shade a mousy tinge, and cause acne? Did you also know that mixing to many different products from different manufacturers together can be toxic and cause an allergic reaction? Yes, cut back on the product! Less is better.

Another reason I advocate less product is so that you know which products actually work on your hair and which don't saving you time, heartache, and money!
Treat your scalp. Gently massage your scalp between washes/rinses. Use a light carrier oil such as olive oil mixed with an essential oil like rosemary or tea tree oil. With a dollop on your finger tips work in circular motions on your scalp. Try not to get it on the hair. If oils are not your thing try a nice cream moisturizer.
Reduce Heat. We all know that heat is drying. No matter how it's used, it usually ends up dehydrating, evaporating, and leaving dry something or another. Prolonged heat causes damage and reduces elasticity. Hair with body and movement, soft coils and fat curls require elasticity to be bouncy and spring back into shape. Too much heat hinders this and leaves strands permanently straight and limp.
Get regular trims. Yes, make sure the already dead dry ends are gone. They sap moisture from the rest of your hair.
Protect it from the elements. In the winter months I tend to put my hair up in protective styles to keep handling to a minimum and to retain those ends. I often wear braid extensions, yarn braids or corn rows to achieve an instant style update all the while keeping my tresses up and protected. Many women wear wigs, weaves, buns or chignons (be careful with your hair line) to achieve the same results. Becareful that whatever style you choose it's not so tight that it pulls excessively at the scalp. The pullng alone can cause stress bumps and dry scalp that looks like dandruff.

Contrary to the the urban legend that your hair grows better dirty- clean hair and a healthy scalp is the way to go. Nothing is more unattractive than a women patting, scratchy, and rubbing her (more than likely dirty) head in an effort to get at the itchies while trying to maintain her hairstyle for 2 weeks or more. Stop the insanity. Healthy hair, be it short or long, no matter how you rock it needs to be clean in order to be shiny and resilient.

I hope the tips above help you to take control of your hair and triumph over your dry scalp. These are tried and true tips that I've learned over the years and have helped me greatly. Questions? Sherlock Kinky Coils Is On the Case

Ooh Chile, have I got a bug to put in your ear. Girl, you gotta promise not to tell NOBODY! I mean not a soul cause I got a reputation to keep but this bug is itching me to death! I gotsta tell somebody, you know I get the one person rule. You gotta promise me. I'm serious! You say my name and I will deny it and give you the evil eye.

Anyways, I was over at Cozy's Place and chile Mojo done left her. Walked right out the house. She can't find him nowhere. Been calling and hunting and wondering where he be and ain't been able to talk him up to save her life. You know the new IK is out, which means the bills are due and she better get to making something but she can't. Forget about a pot to piss in! Honeeey! He ain't left her with a sock with a toe in it to stick her foot in! Winter is cold but it ain't got nuthin on Mojo when he step out on you.

I wanted to tell her that Mojo was ho! But you know you can't tell nobody about their ~~man~~ inspiration. Quiet as kept. I swear I saw him over at Crimson's spot last week. Umm Hmm. He gave her that Cashmere Neckwarmer. Heck he gave her a few in different colors. And she calls herself Virtuous! Hmph! Just today I saw him over at Urb's crib. She tried to play if off by saying her Mojo was at the club with Cozy's but we all know they the same person. **wink** **wink**

And then let me tell you this! I had planned to take this to the grave with me but I couldn't help it. I'll have a little talk with God after I tell you this. Have you noticed that NikkiJ's daughter Teddy Bear looks a lot like Mojo? I know, I know, it's uncanny. She be strutting with her little bad self in those minaturized sweaters. You know Mojo gave her those. Who her momma kidding! Her socks got toes in em.

But even that ain't the half of it! I hear SuperstarRAH is Flo-ing. Only Mojo can put you in that type of mood. I know this for a fact. But you didn't hear that from me.

Okay so you got me! Mojo done been dipping in the yarn stash over here too! How else could I have gotten Buttony in Malabrigo, Trio Shawl in Pagewood Farms, and a dang near finished Cycling Aran in Blue Skys Alpaca? I know I'm wrong, but if lovin him is wrong...you know the rest. I sure hope he come back by here before he head home to Cozy's. The Cycling Aran needs a zipper fixin!

I'm tired of not doing the things I want to do! I'm tired of being bound to reality by practicality and at the same time depressed by my grand fantasies that never seem to come to fruition. I put the kabosh on all of that last night! Michelle Obama's speech on yesterday at UCLA seemed to light a fire under me. I'm still not sure who I'll be voting for on tomorrow, but I am leaning heavily towards the Obama crew. Eventhough I don't agree with all of the Obama alignments, nor am I a Demo or Repub but Indie, I was too done when one of Hillary's campaign heads (by my perception and my perception is what counts on this blog) made a wickedly subversive egalitarian comment about how the Clinton campaign only cares about the people in the states that matter to them. What the?!! But I'm digressing and need to get back on track.

Remember when I said I'll Try? Well I'm going to keep making myself accountable to you all by keeping you up on my progress.

1. I signed up for my Belly Dancing class and have since taken 2 - 3 hour lessons. I've bought a short hip scarf with lots of coins and even a bronze belt and I'm still not done. I'm having so much fun in this class I can't stand it! (Not my tail in the pic)

2. I'm enrolled in a couple of classes this semester and feeling great about it!

3. I made the Eunny Jang Deep V Arglye Vest my Ebony Elite KCAL project. Got the yarn, the sticks, and the pattern. Woo Hoo!

They scream about how wonderful it is for hair growth and how they grew nine inches in 24 hours. J/K! Ya'll know how I am about the "magic in a bottle" faithful. I'm a strong believer that products don't grow hair they just help to create the ideal environment for optimal hair growth. **Don't sleep on this basic truth** You will save a lot of money and heartache if you stop running around trying to find your magic growth bullet in a bottle or pill. **off my soapbox**

I will say that recently when I got my hair pressed it did provide a nice non-oily shine to my hair. Applied properly it wasn't heavy and didn't weigh my hair down. It was applied by my stylist and she raved about it. I decided to try it for myself and give a review of it later. I bought two bottles and so I'll share one with you. Be forewarned that many users warn of the strong scent. Mine wasn't strong but then again I like medicinal smells. So here it is.

I've never been one for New Year's resolutions. I think they make liars out of people. Nor do I like to recap or precap, postcap or whatever years. Ya'll were there and if you weren't I probably told you about it! What I am up for at the beginning of a new year or new season in my life is trying something different or even enhancing my life by delving deeper into previously passing fancies and making them sustainable hobbies or past times. I'm gonna try stuff and if I don't like it I'm going move on, no strings attached, no feelings of defeat.

I plan to [TRY to] run more and become a runner. Not just my usual run 10 miles per week (on a good week) but a consistent got that runners' high runner running a full marathon in a week sans the saggy skin that seems to come with running on pavement. Naw ya'll, I'm a treadmill girl! I'se needs that cushion!

I plan to take Belly Dancing lessons. I've belly danced before but never have taken lessons. Shimmy on FitTV and belly dancing videos on OnDemand don't count! I want to take lessons in a studio and get my finger cymbals on! Clang! Clang! Clang! I want the outfits and the veils but not all that gaudy [Egad!] makeup.

I plan [sho gone TRY] to finish 12 units towards my Bachelors by this summer. We'll see.

I plan [gon make a sure fire effort] to master certain techniques and absolutely try new techniques when it comes to knitting and crochet. As a matter of fact, I think I'm going to go on over to Eunny Jang's site and buy the pattern for her Deep V Argyle vest! Done! It was only $5.25.

Lastly, I plan [I'm gonna try] to add more hair articles to my blog. I've been getting a lot of hits to the site from women who want more information on hair, hair care, and products.

To continue on from that last bullet...Unfortunately my blog has been somewhat misleading as I haven't put up enough substantial information about kinky coils (not me my hair) and hair at all. Matter of factly, I've been neglectful and my Feedburner stats prove it!

Hair readers I want to draw you out. Look forward to my first every give away this week! I plan to give away something that I know you all have been searching for and haven't been able to get your hands on. And just for the heck of it! Motel Babylon...The Day After Christmas

I'm staying home from my primary job today to assist here at The Motel. Why? Because a lot of guests came in with the holiday rush on yesterday and some haven't gone home, thus hindering my progress on getting ready for my primary job. These folks are crazy! I'm only working two jobs because I have to, otherwise this Motel job would be the first to go.

I'm feeling very guilty about missing work today. This is the 3rd absence I've had since being there. Twice because I have been sick and now a third because of ~~alcoholics~~ rowdy guests. One guest in particular has locked herself and her walker in the spa. She was already half way into the spa door so I couldn't stop her. It would have been an event of epic proportions to get her to stop and turn her and the walker (tennis balls and all) around and then help her to make it back to her room and onto the bed.

Dammit!!! I need to be in the spa by 0630. NO EXCEPTIONS! At 0630 everyone in the house freezes. No water is turned on, ST is locked securely in her room finishing dressing for school, and Jeeves is sitting still (well as still as he can with his nervous issue) in the kitchen. All other guests and staff are asleep or at least faking it well.

If I'm not in there on time then I'm running behind and I HATE to be late. I used to love it, you know being fashionable and all, but my Pastor done worked that out of me. Another story for another time. Anyways, being late makes me anxious and leaves me feeling stupid so I don't do it.

I called off 15 minutes ago. She's still in there. I think she may have fallen asleep on the crapper. She done set up camp. She ain't but about 95 pounds. She can't push too much out or she'll lose half her life. LOL. I know I'm being crass. Told the folks at work I'm having home issues. If they only knew...

3 Eves Before Christmas

3 days before Christmas and I still have 2-3 more gifts to get. I say 2-3 because the third I'm not really all that enthused about getting but since this person is a sibling and expecting it I guess I need to get it. I'm trying to give this gift out of the goodness of my heart (most appropriate don't ya think) but my heart thinks no gift is better than a contrived one. My mind on the other hand is saying kill 'em with kindness and let the streets teach them their lessons.

My mind is winning the battle...

An update on the Cycling Aran. I'm just about done. I'm halfway finished with one of the sleeves and plan to start the other one tonight. After that I'm going to knit a lining in the collar with a lighter shade of Jo Sharp Silk Aran Road. I will then spray block it (sans boobs on my mannequin. see pic.) and then insert the zipper and gift wrap. Enjoy the pics. Sorry one is darker because I couldn't really catch the cable detail with the light in my room.

I'm working on some designs of my own. No telling when they'll make it to this blog or even to full completion. In the interim I think I will start on another sweater for myself. I'm thinking either the Buttony Sweater by Katie Marcus or Killybegs by Debbie Bliss. Both have been in my Ravelry que for a minute now.

I Am the Phantom...

I am the phantom that lives in the house

I am the phantom that walks in and out

I am the phantom that will not shout

so no one in the house will know I'm about...

Yep, that sums it up. For the last couple of weeks I have been rising early and coming home really late. Way after others have gone to sleep I've been slipping in the house and acting like I live alone. I haven't seen the faces of some of my family members in a couple of weeks but they know when I'm home. The light in my room is on and when they knock on the door I freeze like I'm invisible until they go away. At other times I feign deafness due to the earphones surgically attached to my ears when I'm here.

I know, some of you would say that I'm wrong while others may be resentful of me for being single, childless, and able to slip in and out without someone or a some thing called familial responsibility attached to my hip. I'm not ashamed. I'm tired ya'll! Hate me, I'm good at being a villain named Single. My krytonite is loneliness and longing.

God promised to remedy my plight, hence my latest project. This picture was taken yesterday so it doesn't show my progress on today alone. Double the height and you'll see where I currently am on my Cycling Aran. I decided to knit it in the round to eliminate as much seaming as possible. I'm a few inches from dividing for the armscye.

This has gone so smooth and the yarn, Blue Sky Alpacas Dyed Organic Cotton, is soooooo soft! I guess the blessings of the Lord do make me rich and add no sorrow... As if I didn't believe.

I went shopping today and bought myself a few treats and took in a movie only to come home to an IRS wage garnishment notice. UGH! I need to go see my tax man like tomorrow.

I checked out the Golden Compass this afternoon. I know all about the reviews and the uproar the church is having with the storyline and the anti-church message. I got it. I liked the movie and I plan to go see the sequel (although I will reserve the right to change my opinion as I read more up on it). I was thoroughly amused through the entire movie. Great cinema! Nicole K is my girl. She's a bad actress and so I tend to like most of her movies.

I picked up Da Truth's album Open Book today and you should check it out. Nice grooves. It's going straight to the iPod and will be my running soundtrack until I'm tired of it or find a lyric that doesn't line up.

I'm really enjoying life. It's all been worth it!

Wow, I didn't realize I had been away for so long. Crimson Purl had to bring me back. Thanks lady! It's late and I'm feeling a little under the weather but enjoy Isobel In Red by French Girl Knits and some shots of the completed Blanket Coat I crocheted. Didn't have a good enough model to model the coat but the candids are nice.
